“How can I express or put in words Mitterstiller. I’m writing this letter on the wooden steps at the house attic….yes…..I stayed on the top of this amazing South Tyrol farm house with full access to a beautiful and exquisite view of the Dolomites. I keep taking pictures to every turn as it’s impossible to ignore or be indifferent to what surrounds you or to what is happening in front of you. The fresh smell of early mornings before the sun wakes up, allows me to seat on a forgotten stool and read my favourite magazine, enjoying a good cup of coffee, a moment for myself.
Any spare time I can have and I walk on what use to be a Roman road, taking again my camera and getting to know the stories that makes this area so idyllic. On my returns I’m greeted by a warm, affable and enormous smile from the host, Helene.
Helene is the spirit of Mitterstiller, even though we do not speak the same language and came from very different milieu, she makes me feel welcome and the simple thing as preparing a good cup of coffee is as interesting as savouring it. Helene is one of the most admirable women I ever met in my life and her way and presence make us believe that there’s still genuine goodness around us. Whilst we dialogue about my recent short adventures, suddenly, I feel very moved by listening an unexpected call….a real cuckoo bird, not the ones that come out of a clock on the wall……..simply whimsical…… and instantly your most deep thoughts and feelings connects you to the heart of this place.
The breakfast and meals are served inside a 600 year old room where we are surrounded by detailed craft wooden panels and analogue forms and shapes that makes the room visual enticing. There’s a sense of belonging, looks like you never left you childhood home, a feeling of togetherness everywhere……what follows every meal is a journey of discovery and enlightenment every time….. here in South Tyrol you’re not anymore a stranger.
All these images, moments, stays in my mind hours after I left Mitterstiller. This is the kind of experience that makes you feel humbler, appreciate what you have and stop complaining about issues that suddenly seem quite insignificant. You realise that there’s place, where time is not a luxury but luxury reflects on how you will translate the feeling and meaning of escapism.”
